Action
Silybum marianum: Silybum marianum has been well evidenced for the treatment of liver disease. Silybum marianum contains Silymarin; composed of the flavanolignans silybin, silydianin, and silychristine, with silybin being the most biologically active. It also contains betaine, trimethylglycine and essential fatty acids, which may contribute to silymarin's liver protective and anti-inflammatory effects.
Taraxacum officinale: Traditionally, Taraxacum officinale has been used as a remedy for jaundice and other disorders of the liver and gallbladder, and as a remedy for counteracting water retention.
Schisandra chinensis: The major active compounds in schisandra are lignans (schizandrin, deoxyschizandrin, gomisins, and pregomisin) found in the seeds of the fruit. These lignans have a protective effect on the liver. Their preparations, and individual constituents are widely used for progressive hepatic degeneration due to viral hepatitis or chemical challenge which is well documented. Schisandra lignans appear to protect the liver by activating the enzymes in liver cells that produce glutathione, which is an important antioxidant substance.
Astragalus membranaceus: Astragalus membranaceus has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Astragalus is used for protecting the liver.
Cynara scolymus (Globe Artichoke): Artichoke has been well recognised in traditional medicine for centuries. It may assist in liver and gallbladder problems. In Europe, it is used for liver and gallbladder disorders.
Andrographis paniculata: The leaves of Andrographis paniculata have been used in Ayurveda. In herbal medicine this herb is used mostly for its "bitter" properties, as a treatment for digestive problems. Some studies suggest that andrographis may help protect the liver from toxic injury.
Curcuma longa: Curcuma longa improves the action of the liver and helps reverse liver damage. The herb keeps alcohol and other toxins from being converted to a harmful form within the liver.
Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C): Vitamin C functions as an antioxidant and prevents or lessens toxic damage to liver cells. High amounts of vitamin C also have been known to "clean out" the liver, flushing away fats and fatty buildup, protecting the liver against cirrhosis.
Choline bitartrate: Choline is an essential nutrient required by the body to make several important compounds necessary for healthy cell membranes. Choline is essential for fat metabolism. Choline functions as a methyl donor and it is required for proper liver function.
Inositol: Inositol has long been known for its lipotropic effects, that is, it breaks down fat. It has been reported that inositol, much like choline, has the ability to break down fats within the liver. This prevents the excessive buildup of fat in the liver, which can cause health problems.
Taurine: Taurine is a derivative of the amino acid cysteine. It is an antioxidant found throughout the body that strengthens the liver's ability to eliminate harmful toxins.
